The four-year-old girl was playing reportedly near a screened window when the screen came off and the child fell out the window, according to a news release.
While playing with her cousin in her bedroom Saturday afternoon, a Palm Harbor child was reportedly near a screened window. The screen fell off and the girl went out the window, according to a news release.
The four-year-old child's mother was downstairs in the kitchen and heard the girl's cry for help. The child was found in the Fox Chase Blvd. yard near a tree and she complained of an injured wrist, the report said.
The girl was airlifted to All Children's Hospital where she is recovering. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and for observation, the report said.
Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputies assisted fire rescue personnel by establishing a landing zone for the Bay Flight helicopter. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m., according to a news release.

I broke my wrist as a kid and never got a free helicopter ride. What gives?

Me too - broke my arm. But helicopters hadn't been invented yet and being pulled behind a horse wasn't considered "news.". Even though the snow.was deep and the blizzard was blowing.

A serious question that would be a valuable follow up to this story. My understanding is that Bayflite can be very expensive.- about $5,000 base plus $100 per mile. And, the patient (or family) is not the one who makes the decision but will be billed if it's not covered by the patient's insurance. I don't mean that it's necessarily bad but I would be an unhappy papa if I got a $10,000 bill for this helicopter ride. Here's a story from 2006 that's illustrative http://www.sptimes.com/2006/11/22/State/Bayflite_call_not_inj.shtml

Great minds think alike, Howard :) I thought the same thing myself when this story crossed! I am guessing that the emergency crew may have wanted to be safe, in case the child may have had neck or back injuries that would require an xray to diagnose, but that is just a guess, obviously I'm no doctor! When I first moved here years ago, I got the impression that bayflite airlifted a lot of patients from traffic accidents. Where I am from, the traffic is very bad, but airlifts are only done in extremely life-threatening situations. I think that is because we had "Medic One" trucks and crews on the ground.

You're right, Sunde - the purpose really was to save lives that would be lost if there was delay. But here, the child apparently was conscious - mom heard her cry. Morton Plant Mease is pretty close and they have an xray machine. All ambulances have backboard. But you're also right about they were probably being cautious. Of course, the cynical side in me says they've got a helicopter worth many millions of dollars to pay for plus a pretty good sized crew and facility. However - I'm sure they all are honest and would not simply run up a fee to make the payments.

A good story would be to follow the money, or in this case the invoice...

Let alone the possibility of neglect charges.
