An online petition has been filed with the White House requesting that Florida be allowed to “withdraw from the United States of America.” Do you think it’s time to go it alone?
A growing group of Floridians think the state should break away from the United States and run its own affairs.
Doubt it?
There’s an official petition filed with the federal government via the White House’s website. The petition had 18,728 signatures as of 8:45 a.m. Nov. 13. It has a goal of 25,000 signatures and was only created on Nov. 10.
There’s even some momentum behind the idea it would seem. When Sarasota Patch ran an article on the petition, it was reported there were only 1,343 signatures. That number has since climbed in leaps and bounds, nearing the goal of 25,000.
Here’s what the petition asks:
We the people of the great state of Florida, do see that in today's world the Federal Government has not led our citizens justly and with honor. We therefore as free men and women of our great state do believe that it is time to take matter upon ourselves to ensure our continued freedom, and to enact our own laws and hereby govern ourselves without the federal government's involvement in our internal matters from this day forward.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin: 1775
What do you think? Has the federal government failed to lead “justly and with honor?” Is it time for states like Florida to stand up and say “enough?” Or, is the federal government right on track and the petition an off-base attempt to undermine the Union? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

After doing some digging, not surprisingly this issue flared up in years past. Legally, states cannot really secede from the U.S., but states have the right to break up into more states. Could you imagine a North Florida and a South Florida as two states?

If Florida seceded, I suspect lots of people would be headed out to the US. Without the federal government, Florida would quickly join the ranks of the third world nations. Interestingly, the secessionists would find themselves among a growing population of Hispanics, something I doubt they would relish in the Republic of Florida.

Well, here is the thing. 1st. Obama's agenda is to make us join up with the United Nations Agenda of equal Distribution of wealth. And before you nay-says talk look it up. 2nd Obama is a Socialist. He is Racist along with his wife. Michele particularly takes a stab slavery each time the the thought moves her. As when she mentioned how slaves built the White House. 3rd, If Florida , Texas and Georgia all managed to accomplish Secession the comment made down below how more Hispanics would move here and become a 3rd world country..nope...See, the groups that live of Obama's welfar handout would leave and go to States that offered it .. P.S. forgive my typo's below...This whole mess truly troubles me... Secession will never happen. Washington won't allow it. The idea of it being so big right now with the voices of Americans is that it is a way to Make Obama see who we feel. Seceeding in reality wont happen now.....yet as I said this is venue to vocalize how NAmerica feels. nay-sayers talk how Obama is the greatest..Again read his Books. They are a clear description of his racist views, how he hates American Views, talks about his Muslim Faith...so before you open your mouth get educated. Read his words, then you will see.. I disagree that Florida would become like third world nations. Our economy would far surpass the other states still part of the U.S. because we would take what we pay in federal taxes now and use it for local government and the local economy. Perhaps, these whack jobs should look to history to help put their petition into perspective. At the beginning of the civil war South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union. Unfortunately, they paid the heaviest price also because when General Sherman marched through their state with his union forces the devastaion was brutal and complete. Who was it that said, "if we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it?" Conversely, "If you serve up a banquet of sour grapes, then all you and others are left with is a sour taste in their mouths."

To answer Brian White’s question: No.
Secession movements are generally fringe groups- which is a nice way of saying crazy people. Very few of these folks really believe that secession is remotely possible. For most, it is a flamboyant way of expressing their (sometimes extreme) views and generating a little press in the process. And The Patch obliges.
The very few who really believe are squirreled away in their basement working on a “project” with their soldering iron; surrounded by stockpiled caches of food and weapons.

Secession is not abandoning the country... It is about A State paying it's own bills, sustaining itself without Government intrusion Governing itself. States like California, Florida for example have economies that are larger than most countries in fact Texas ranks 15th in the world. What we want is a socialist Obama who is against Colonial America who believes the Consitution doesn't apply to him to either, Resign, Be Impeached or let us have our own government. What people fail to grasp is that secession still retains the States Loyalty to the Country in defending it.

If our checkbook would be balanced, then why is our state deeply in debt now. Blaming the government for the lay offs that companies are doing to capturing record profit growth isn't just short sighted. How do you explain the average real corporate annual profit growth of 77.4% the last four years. So you are blaming the government for companies growing after dealing with a -17.4% annual profit growth under 8 years of Bush. You are blaming for the Government for the lack of business management when the signs were out there and new legislation is out there. That is on the managers of business.

Florida, and as of yesterday, 20 other States, also have petitions to secede. I, like many, are fed-up with the present state of politics in our Country. When I took my military oath (twice, once as an enlisted recruit and again as a commissioned officer years later) their is a line (paraphrased) to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States". Our politicians take a similar oath. Are they protecting and defending our Constitution or are they trying to pervert and change our Constitution?
To those that say that "legally" States can't secede, apparently they forget our Civil War and the Revoluntionary War. Read our Declaration of Independence, where we did not wait for "legal" secession from Britain or again from the North.
The politicians do what they want, lie to us, and act like royalty when in fact they are our "servants" and required by law to abide by the same rules that we are subject too. I have lived through 12 Presidents and have never seen anything like this.
How long would the non-secessionist survive? Most of them don't have flush economies. They would be borrowing from us! Texas, a secessionist, alone has one of the top ten economies in the World! Between Texas,Florida and Louisiana we would own most of the oil fields, have the best harbors, the best fishing, and along with the other secessionist the strongest manufacturing and technology base in the Confederated United States. You may want to think about this. Our gain your loss.

VofR,
I do know the history, and due to what happened after the Civil War the 10th Ammendment lost a lot of the power behind it. So, yes, I do remember the Civil War, and the aftermath which reduced the power of the 10th Amendment. The Constitution is what is considered a living document, meant to change with time. Do you believe all rules initially written in the Constitution hold true today? The Florida economy which is currently largely based on tourism, doesn't overall have the workforce to be self sustain. There are natural resources as you point out, but where is the mass manufacturing going to happen in Florida today? The things you point out as having, like Oil fields which are mostly in international waters which are not owned by Florida. Texas does have some oil, but not as much as it did 30 years ago. Where is this great technological base you are referring to between Florida, Texas, and Lousiana.. It's not like we are Silicon Valley. We are about average, maybe below average. The one thing Florida would have is their second strongest industry after Tourism, Cattle.

Yes, my oath (taken first when I enlisted, and later took upon my commissioning as an officer) was to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States", but you have either forgotten, or deliberately chosen to ignore, the words of the oath immediately after that: "against all enemies, foreign and domestic."
Secessionists would be domestic enemies of the Constitution.
As a retired officer (and not merely a former officer) I am still duty bound by that oath, and the only reason why I wouldn't take up military arms against secessionists is that I am too old and decrepit to be of value for that purpose.
But there are hundreds of thousands on active duty, and millions more in reserve and retired, ready to do what is necessary if the FBI is not capable of battling any secessionists.

I as well took the oath of enlistment during my time in the Marines. I fully support the secessionist for those that claim you are still duty bound you are right. You are duty bound to ensure that your country remains free and that its people remain free. To ensure individual sovereignty from any Government and its agencies that are in tyranny. To ensure any law that is contrary to the Constitution is null and void. The Constitution and its attachments, including Federalist Paper, The Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence lays forth the duties of the people to protect themselves and each other from domestic encroachments on liberties and lives. The Federal Government has no authority to overstep its limited powers. However over the decades the Federal Government has do just that. Repeatedly overstepped its bounds. Infringed upon your civil liberties and has become a government that is self serving. It is no longer a Government for the people by the people rather a puppet Government serving its "special interest" at the cost of its citizens. The problem is the Infringing has be sold as "Whats Best for You" and "One Size Fits All" to the point that the average person has no idea what they have lost. The 10th Amendment only lost its power because WE THE PEOPLE allowed it to. Let you forget that the government derives its power from the govern. Unless willing forfeit your right to self govern, if that be the case, I feel sorry for you and your children.

I think we all understand what Debt is. Most major corporations carry functional debt. Do you think it is as easy as A+L = E? I don't believe anyone has lost the sense of reason, but also we know these things are not happening in a vaccuum. Our state is bleeding money, because we are poorly structured for industry. Like our country, the workforce isn't educated with the correct skills for the jobs of the 21st Century. In all business mathematics you aren't looking at just basic mathematics. You have to take the derivatives of what is going on, see the tends. The problem is both our business and government leaders were not doing that for the last 12+ years. How do you expect to recover from businesses losing out on profit of approximately 20% for 8 years, then taking cost cutting measures to regrow. It's not as easy as a solution as what you are claiming.
What you are also saying is, "In America we create problems, then cut and run. We no longer fix the mess we made"

BillyRay, I do understand the concept of our federal debt. I understand how it was caused by the Republican administration of Bush/Cheney who started two wars, refused to pay for the costs of these wars, and then gave tax breaks for millionaires. The cause of our current federal debt is actually very easy to understand.

It's freaking crazy how out of touch with reality you are........it's readily available for all to see it is the system you should be railing against, not one of the criminal gangs.

You really think a Nancy Pelosi type individual cares about the poor.......and actually represents them? Give me a break. 99% of the politicians do not give a damn about you and I......the sooner all realize this, the sooner we can enact change.
As it is, Joe C. people like you and others who buy into the rhetoric of one side are the problems in the country. Pipe dream - 4,235,270 (50%) will say no. and I am sure most of the 4,162,081 (49.14%) will say no also. Want to visit family outside of Florida? Border checkpoints / customs / immigration. Tariff's on goods from Florida etc etc etc. The costs involved in creating a govermental infrastructure. Likely Florida will need to impose Need to buy Navy ships / Air Force etc, new bases because the federal government owns those bases and is not going to give them up (like Guantanamo). Likely a Florida income tax will need to be imposed to pay for the additional infrastructure. i bet Florida does not have much of a manufacturing bases to produce goods to sell It will never happen. This irony is if it did occur, along with other states, these self centered secessionists would have made it easier for China to become the dominant player in the world.

I don't think it would be that difficult for Florida or any other state to break off from the US. The government infrastructure is already there. It would be a matter of negotiation of the state's share of the national debt and whether the Democratic part of the state (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade & Monroe) could remain as part of the US. States could also form looser associations with the Federal Govt...like a commonwealth. I think independence or a looser association with the Federal government could be a good idea for states if a majority of its population wants it. It should be discussed without name calling and partisian nastiness. Its a legitimate thing to discuss. Peoples all over the world broke off at one time or another to form their own countries. I can only imagine how much happier both sides might be.

The only union I know of where one joins but cannot leave is the MAFIA. If a state or group of states wish to band together and form a new republic why is that so wrong? Lexington and Concord were the beginning of a new nation that began the same way. A brave group that were ready to overthrow tyrrany (a.k.a. Taxation without Representation).
Senators and Congessmen of both parties come home and espouse the doctrine that people want to hear then return to D.C. and march in lock step with those whose ideology does not reflect the home crowd. Exceptions, yes there are a few - by and large they muddy the line between red or blue.
Someone needs to stand up and tell the truth. The truth about everything from the auto bailout, the financial bailout, down to the recent cover up on Libya. Politicians of both parties are cauup in the talk of the day - not in the business of the people.
Secession? Maybe. Reformation? For sure.

Spencer,
Both parties are in on the mess that has been made. But is there answer to secceed or reform. The problem, is we as a society do not expect more out of our government. This is not a Red/Blue, Obama/Romney, Democrat/Republican issue. It's an American Issue. Our economy is owned by a corporate majority. Politicans want you to think it is people who run this organization, but it's the corporations. The 1%ers aren't people, but corporations. We keep giving loopholes and buyouts to the corporations. As Americans as a single voice, we should be saying "I've had enough, and we are not going to take it anymore". But instead we get divided on issues that in the grand view matter little. While the Corporate parties Rep/Dem are taking our money and rights out from under us. Secession is just saying, we have lost the will to fix what is broke. Reform in all phases is what I would say is needed.

America should want to put everyones personal issues aside long enough to make sure there will be an America left for us to have conversation between opposing views. I don't know if that's possible. Due to our structure, we are not at the point of teetering, but we aren't as far from it as others think as well. The Partisanship has created an environment or lack of movement. American is a strong and beautiful nation, but the people within it need to remember what we are truly founded on. Once we do that, we can start to move forward.

Many thanks to those of you with the patience to try to discuss this issue; some of the pro-secession comments/arguments/whinings are pretty off the wall. I must admit I am very shocked about the lack of loyalty expressed by those who have strong negative feelings about the current environment in the USA, seem to consider themselves the ONLY patriots, but are willing to leave their country in its hour of need (as defined by them). Where is the patriotism in that? In my opinion, the whole secession movement is populated by cowards and bullies. "If I don't get everything my way, I am taking my toys and leaving!!" That kind of attitude is bad for the person and bad for the country.

This isn't a Red/Blue.. Republican/Democrat issue. The Republicans are not the only reason we are in the financial mess we are in today. Yes, the bubble bursted under Bush and his Economic policies were dated. But the issues we fact today have been brewing for decades. The partisan politics by both parties have injuried and factured this country. Republicans are not the only ones who have engaged in these tactics. Just like the Romney campaign wasn't the only one fighting dirty this year. We need to stop with the infighting, and start realizing this is an American issue. Pointing fingers at this point solves nothing.

In Florida, 70% of the electorate is white. 30% is Hispanic and Black in that order. The majority of white voters (Republican & Democrat) broke for Romney this election cycle. It was for one reason only. The economy. The Democratic Party successfully motivated turn out among the 30% and peeled off enough from the 70% to win the election. This election wasn't about race, multiculturalism or anything else among most Romney supporters.

Florida and at least 20 other States would be the new nation! That is nearly half of our present Country. We would have to give "foreign aid" to States like California and New York who are both broke from irresponsible, unbridled spending but always vote BLUE. What is it that the rest of you don't get? Have we become such a credit card and welfare nation that only a few of us believe in paying our way and sacrificing and doing without if we can't pay for it. There is a saying, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime". The government doesn't earn anything. Our taxes (income, gas, sales, tangible, intangible, energy, real estate, business, etc, etc) pay for government. Government workers make more on average than the private sector worker (70+ thousand to 40+ thousand) This is ridiculous. They have a job where they can't (except in very extreme circumstances) be fired and then we pay for their pensions for the rest of their lives when the rest of us are struggling to get by on SSI and what money is left in our savings! Absurd! And to top it off they want MORE! Why? So they can fritter that away as well. If I hear one more time that it's "for the children and law enforcement " BUNK! Billions go to education and we rank lower than Singapore. Law enforcement gets money and they buy Armed Vehicles to bust pot dealers! Really! VOR, It's interesting that you now have 20 states that you can form your new country with. Unfortunately, you have your facts all wrong when it comes to which states are more dependent on the federal government. The federal data clearly shows that red states receive more federal spending relative to taxes than the blue states. Those who claim to be fiscally conservative are actually the ones who tend to feed at the federal trough the most. Alaskans are the most dependent on the federal government, receiving $7,448 in spending (net of taxes) per capita. New England, the Mid-Atlantic States, Minnesota and Illinois are the biggest net givers. It is very interesting to note that the states with high percentages of people who pay no income tax tend to vote Republican, not Democratic. Good luck with the new country that you are forming. If you leave, you will soon be begging to come back and join the U.S. so that your collection of red states can continue getting all of your subsidies that are largely funded by the blue states.

Your kidding, right! Are you telling me that California, New York, Nevada, Washington, and Pennsylvania are more fiscally fit then, Texas, Florida and Wisconsin? It's true that Mississippi usually ranks at the bottom of the economic scale but that's because it's poor. What is California's excuse? Blue Virginia and Maryland are low in unemployment not because of industry or production but due to the Federal Government pork pie. This is where the federal workers live off of our tax dollars!
Listen, if you're satisfied with the way things are going, God bless you but I pity your children. We can engage in political banter ad infinatum but it won't change the simple facts that we are going in the wrong direction. The seccession movement, I believe, is a wake-up call that a large group of our population is dissatisfied with our present government; not the form, but the function as it is practiced today. I don't know why this clueless dolt won again (but it does concern me) but if we keep doing the same thing and expect a different result, it is certainly insane! (paraphrased: Albert Einstein)
America now votes for who is the most popular super star, like high school, rather than who would have the best chance of getting us back on our feet. We are the American Idol, Dancing with the Stars nation now, not the responsible world leader that we used to be and the bastion and example of freedom and liberty.

They would say that the majority rules and we have to accept living with the Republicans in control. But now since Pres. Obama and the Democrats won, the Republicans start whining and crying and they want to secede from the union. It's unfortunate that followers of Fox News and Rush Limbaugh don't like that this country elected a black president and many Democratic women in the Senate to lead this country for the next four years. This country will continue to move forward whether or not the right wingers approve of this direction. All Americans need to unite behind our elected president in order to make this country a better place to live. Dividing this country by threatening to secede only hurts our country's future.

Florida can't even count its votes on time in a Presidential election. How would you expect it to manage all of it's other systems? Traffic lights would be forever red, trains would be late, schools would teach that the earth is 6000 yrs old and that mankind was created at the time of the dinosaurs, Governor Scott would do away with all social programs, including health care and would declare himself to be a permanent governor. Just imagine if Florida really did secede from the U.S. We could then have Gov. Rick Scott as our President and he would be supported by a totally Republican legislature in Tallahassee. Pres. Scott wouldn't have to be burdened by any of the restrictions placed on him by the U.S. Constitution. He could live the Republican fantasy of turning the clocks back to an earlier era when women had no family planning rights, Planned Parenthood could then be closed down, we could go back to being part of the Old Segregated South, we could remove "evolution" from classroom science books and replace it with biblical creation stories, we could start funding religious institutions with public tax dollars (as long as the institution is Christian), we could prohibit unions and worker's rights, and we could limit voting rights for minorities again. Pres. Scott could proudly take down the U.S. flag from the State House and replace it with the Old Confederate flag. Just think of all of the possibilities for Florida if we seceded from the U.S. and we didn't have to abide by the U.S. Constitution and all of those activist Supreme Court judges.

Michael D., My point was the importance of our U.S. constitution in protecting our rights in here Florida. If this state ever seceded from the Union, the U.S. Constitution would no longer apply and that is a great risk to all of our individual freedoms and liberties. Prior comment here have mainly argued about the economic downside of separation from the U.S. and the finacial burdens of doing everything ourselves from creating a military to paying out social security checks to seniors. I agree that there are radicals on the left and the right. However at the moment, it appears to be those on the extreme right who want to remove the gains achieved by women and minorities, suppress the right to vote, and impose their personal and religious beliefs on everybody else.

That being said, I say we let the sessionist Confederate States of America secede, Willard Romney could be their President, as he won the majority of them anyway, and he could appoint Donald Trump as his Vice-President, considering his extensive bankruptcy experiance, give them their percentage of national debt and remove all military assests to the Northern States. Of course, then when they fail to pay or default on their debts, we take all those military assets and march through the south like "Uncle Billy" did, once again. The Extreme Right are what is being broadcasted all over Liberal Media, just like the extreme Left is being broadcasted all over Conservative Media. Why because people eat it up. You watch those broadcasts to see the extremes, not what the other 80% of this country feels. News isn't about News anymore, it's about ratings. So you play right into the hands of the extreme right with banging the drums of how they are this and that. We give them power by this kind of conflict. If we were not so partisan in our nation (which your posts shows you are very partisan). These people who go under the rock they crawled out of and died. But it is the extreme left screaming at the top of their lungs that feeds the extreme right, and vice versa. It's not about partisanship anymore, this problem is too big and caused by both parties. Some of the regulations that were removed under Carter and Clinton were part of what caused this mess. To blame one said with broad brush strokes which you have started doing as of later. You hear that he doesn't know how to create jobs and that he likes to give away government benefits like food stamps to the lazy 47%. A conservative's main argument against liberals is simply economic. However a liberal's argument against conservatives is more than economic. There is a liberal economic argument that the Republicans cut taxes for millionaires while supporting the Ryan budget that eliminates much of the middle class safety net. However, the main difference is that extreme conservatives also intend to take away the personal freedoms and civil liberties from others in society like women, minorities, gays, immigrants, etc. The religious right somehow seems to believe that everybody must obey their personal and religious beliefs. They have tried to use the government, the courts, referendums, and the school departments impose their religious beliefs and take away other's rights. This is why I have no problem taking the progressive side in the political debate between liberals and conservatives.

It's not neutrality, but I view things as what I am an Independent American. I see the extremes as the problem. Nothing to do with neutral, but with how I see our nation being brought down by extreme. I do not aim to be neutral, but informed. Your agrument is basically the Right/Conservatives are wrong on a number of social issues. Which yes, the party is behind the times. But you also blame them for all that has gone wrong economically. Bush though not the best economic president, not in a long shot. But isn't the cause of all the problems. Just like Republicans are not the racist fearmonigers that you protray them. Their are some that are, and there are some that I find to be pure evil. But your agruments have come down to all the general liberal media talking points. Honestly, as an independent the 47% coment didn't matter to me. Because he was right, 47% percent of the electoriate wasn't going to vote for him regardless of what he said. nowing lobbysts I knew that Roe v. Wade wasn't going anywhere. Just like there was about 47% of the electoriate in our fractured nation that wasn't going to vote Obama. The true test was the group inbetween. Obama won that, his margin in electorial votes was great, but in popular votes not so much. We are a fractured nation by people who think they know what is best listening to just one side of an extreme story.

No one will secede...no one really wants to leave this great country...my best guess is they want to leave the bickering and blaming...the working class and retirees do not want to pay for those unwilling to be productive...productive...was this country not formed by people that left their homeland for WHAT reasons? Did they come in wooden boats across raging seas? I do not begrudge a wealthy person one cent...they had a dream and followed through...we all had it within us a one point in our lives...I know a young couple that resorted to selling hotdogs and sandwiches for 3 years until they recently created better jobs...they had no assistance and asked for none. They were 'Entitled'. They have the true American Spirit. They have honor. This division is about responsibility, integrity, honor... America may be completely divided, completely broken, hearts are raging...sadly. Asking to secede is asking for some relief from the madness..Americans love their country...all Americans

"Hey Joe C, where you going with that gun in your hand?" I'm on your side brother as evidenced by my comments regarding your postings. Sorry, if my satirical rant was not appreciated. Sometimes I just can't help myself though because of the absurdity of what we are all discussing here. What the Secessionist movement is proposing borders on insanity. Trust me, because as a trained mental health professional I know that of what I speak of here. All the rational and reasoning in the world has little or no effect on those who are deeply delusional and only listening to the voices in their heads or what they hear on the radio. Psychotropics, on the other hand, are sometimes the only answer to bring such individuals down to any cognative level of reality. As for me, I'm done with all this nonsense and am over and out of here! Thanks again, for a real good time. Seeee ya!

David, I appreciate your informed comments and the consistency in which you make your arguments. I find that the current secessionist movement, which consists mainly of conservatives from Southern states, to be a movement with mostly racial undertones. There is a deep Southern resentment against federal government interference that has existed since the Abolitionist movement to end slavery and then with the resulting Civil War. Also in the 1950's and 1960's, the federal government sent federal troops to force the South to end racial segregation and give minorities their civil rights. Although most supporters of this movement don't state it openly, having just elected a black president has ignited this secessionist movement. This white Southern fantasy that they can return to an antebellum South if only the northern "Yankees" and Washington D.C. would just leave them alone is a very dangerous idea. Only 150 years ago, a war was fought over this idea of Southern secession and 620,000 people lost their lives. As George Santayana stated "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

[ I don't know why some people dwell SO MUCH on Obama being "black" ... he is also "white" and had a white mother to prove it! Race shouldn't matter, but some people are so filled with neurotic FEAR they can't see anything else.
I'm a "Yankee" .. I moved to Florida with my parents in the early 1970's as a teen. Not long after arriving my first foul "taste" of Florida was when I saw a HUGE cross burning against the night sky in a field along Hwy 19 in Palm Harbor while a man dressed in a white sheet guarded the entrance holding a shot gun. That's when I realized I was living in a state full of hate and crazy people. Sadly, Florida hasn't changed a bit .. ]

The reason I dwell on that issue has to do wit h Pres. Obama who has demonstrated and presented himself as a "Black" person, when in fact he is classified as "Other", based upon the Federal Government's own methods of classification. Additionally, he has acted as a "Blackman" in almost every situation removing himself from his white heritage whenever possible. Read his books if you want to know who he really believes he is.

Pres. Obama has not presented himself as a "Black" person and he has not acted as a "Blackman" in almost every situation so that he can remove himself from his white heritage. This is a ridiculously stupid and racist statement. The President is an intellectual and a Harvard University Law School graduate. As President, he has always acted as a thoughtful and caring President, not simply as a black president as you allege. The President was born biracial and he has equal black and white heritage. He does not spend any of his time separating himself from his white heritage. Your comments show just how racist much of this country still is and how far we still need to go to achieve racial equality.

314.7 million Americans.
124 millions voted.
62 millions voted for Obama.......that's nearly 1 in 6 Americans.
Attempt to deny it all you want, but neither Florida nor the Country supports Obama as much as you want to believe.
5 out of 6 Americans did NOT vote for him. Heck, nearly 4 out of 6 didn't vote at all.
If you want to talk about people "speaking" or "making things clear".................4 out of 6 did not consent to any of the insanity in the political arena. Ultimately, those who haven't voted should be complaining the loudest because they didn't consent to any of this.
So 5 out of 6 Americans are supposed to bow down to the will of 1/6??
FYI: I'd be stating the same exact thing if Romney "won."
Awaken from your sleep and slumber. For many, secession isn't an Obama thing, it's a big Govt thing.......and it's also "American." Curious, how many of you let your children dictate everything in your life?

LYNDA, we might as well extend voting privileges to children, the majority of them would be just as informed......or should I say ill-informed.....as the rest of the voting public. It's quite obvious the majority of Americans are 100% clueless when it comes to the Politics.
Want to laugh and cry.......go to you tube and type in Obama supporters or Romney supporters. And if you actually do that......type in Ron Paul supporters and tell me is you notice a difference between the 3 groupings of people.
I simply provided the actual numbers so the people who keep stating "AMERICA HAS SPOKEN" can see that their thinking is flawed. People believe Obama has the big mandate due to the Electoral College trouncing, but this is furthest from the truth.
Nearly 4 out of 6 Americans did not vote. Exclude the children if you prefer and it is still nearly 3 out of 6. 16 millions less voted this cycle......more and more Americans are seeing through the facade. If only we could get all those who are apathetic to join the ranks of the incensed.

Samuel Clemens or should I call you Mark Twain? An appropriate name for this discussion, I might add. I couldn't agree with you more. Our Educational system should be very proud of their success of burning tax dollars and dumbing-down the American student. Our media should be very proud of their obviously biased, factually remiss, tripe they call the "news". Our millionaire career politicians should be proud of pilfering the public coffers for their own agenda while they have the guts to ask us for more (feudal system anyone?) and in the mean time, denigrate successful people who actually EARNED their wealth (once the American Dream obtainable by all).
We have lost our way and the self-perpetuating cycle that we are on doesn't allow for objective options. Isn't the U.S. "too big to fail"? Why are we allowing it? Those of us who have "grown-up" and informed ourselves on the facts of geopoliticism are doomed to the petty whims of the great unwashed American Idol masses.
Sometimes you have to let the child get hurt to learn their lesson. The Roman Empire, as did all the other great empires, failed, maybe it's our turn. Unfortunately it will be a much more dangerous world that is left for us to fend in and all those who preceded us to obtain our present liberty will have their efforts gone in vain.

No, but they are included in his numbers Can felons vote" No, but they are included in his numbers. The only appropriate statistic is the per cent of adults of voting age. Of that number, President Obama received 50%+ of all the voters who voted.

The Union is forever, and if the extremists don't like it, they can simply leave and migrate to whatever nation they would prefer.
Love it, or leave it, folks.
And as for S. Clemens, no election is won by a majority of all of the American people; they are won by a majority of those Americans who vote (except for Bush in 2000, when the Electoral College combined with the Supreme Court to hand the presidency to Dubya).
So spare us your arithmetic, as those stats are superfluous to democracy.
The American people have spoken, and it doesn't matter if you don't like the result. I didn't like the result in 2000 or 2004, but I had to suck it up and either leave the US, or get on with my life. I got on with my life.

The truth is they can't stand that our President is a black man and so they now want to secede from the Union to form a collection of mainly Southern states that will only elect white conservative Republicans. The point, Sam, is that the matter of secession -- possible, or not possible -- was settled, nearly one hundred and fifty years ago, by a very bloody Civil War.
Those who persist in denying that secession is not legally possible are doomed to suffer the fate of those who attack the Constitution.
You can disagree all you want.
You can rant, and rave, just like the extreme leftists did over the George W Bush selection in 2000, and then his actual election in 2004, but you can't secede.

Dedicated to the latest edition of Samuel Clemens:
The Joseph Goebels News Network has reported that the US State Department has signed a treaty with the Romulans, and pledged that all white males between the ages of 18 and 65 will serve two year terms in the Blue Helmet Forces of the Romulan Empire.
On that basis Glenn Breitbart, lead anchor for Goebels, has theorized that this means that Obama will now release the five Klingons, who someone's fourth cousin in Charlston claimed are being held in Area 51, to the Gamma Sigma terrorist brigade based on the planet Alderaan.
The fact that the twelve captured Klingons, part of the Klingon invasion force which the Obama-led US Armed Forces has been unable to locate, are now being granted preferred work-visa status by Obama's left-wing Immigration and Nationalization Service, is cited by other unidentified sources as proof that socialism now exists in this country.
Once those fifty-seven Klingons receive their visas, it is expected that they will take over the public library system in the United States, thereby rendering everyone not now watching Goebels News as clueless as those who do.

Samuel Clemens ... re: the planks of the Communist Manifesto
Interesting read, but things like this can put "fear" into people's heads and make them do stupid stuff. My poor mother was one of those that went "berzerk" in the 1950's / 60's when everyone was CERTAIN the Russians were ready to drop an atomic bomb on America and take over the country. The Detroit raido stations would occasionally broadcast where & when a radiation cloud from Russia was ready to pass over our neighborhoods and warned mothers to bring the children inside until the danger passed. As a little kid I wondered HOW IN THE WORLD a radio station could possibly tell a radiation cloud from any other clould .. much less a cloud from Russia.
FEAR is a very powerful tool. FEAR will send reasonable people into crazy thinking and "loopy" behavior .... just make 'em believe the Russians are coming or the sky is falling and they will believe ANYTHING.

Carla, Knowledge is Power. I have more faith and hope knowing what I know........although I sometimes wish I subscribed to "ignorance is bliss!"
Let me ask you, Carla, do you watch the news on tv or read the newspapers? What do you think the media peddles?? FEAR. Watch your local news broadcast and tell me how much fear is induced, opposed to hope. I guarantee there's a heckuva lot more stories about how you should fear this........fear that.....rapes, murders, car accidents, malpractice, accidents, fires, tornadoes, robberies, etc......The news is the biggest fear monger out there today and people eat it up, but simply giving knowledge is equated to injecting fear?
As I said, it's quite evident, America has already gone way done the Communistic path. Seriously, any person with the ability to read and think for themselves can read the 10 planks and see just how many have been implemented.
How about this fear pushed upon all?

Stop regurgitating everything the Cartoon News Network or the Main Stream Nazi Brown Nosers. Quit blaming the money and start blaming those who accept the money............or more importantly, start blaming those electing these demons into office. Don't worry, Sean Marsh, in a R administration, the good ole USA agreed to the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America(SPP) with both Canada and Mexico. Have you ever heard of the S.P.P.? The Govts originally had a website for it, but due to much backlash from the informed, the countries took down the site and pretended to end the "partnership" but this is total bs.
Obama continued the merging of the countries when he and Prime Minister Harper singed the United States-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC).....creating so-called perimeter defenses around North America. I know this will sound crazy to those who live in tv land, but what I just revealed is the beginnings of the North American Union.
The SPP website may be down, but the Canadians still have this one:
http://actionplan.gc.ca/en/page/bbg-tpf/border-action-plan
FYI: Those living in Europe were unaware of the European Union until they were living in it. The Treaty of Rome was the beginning of the Union, nearly 40 years prior to the unveiling of the present day EU. Step by step they laid plans through treaties and agreements between different parties until one day the people were living within an arrangement none of them agreed upon.

Why do politicians have the right to put poisons in your water, have brand new work vehicles in every county/city I have seen, and destroy how many trees in order to put yet another 'recreation' center,in areas that already have plenty that are empty, tear up yet another road (which are never completed) but never adjust lights to help ease traffic problems, then they whine they don't have money in their budgets? All at a time when residents can't even afford to eat and pay to live decently because our taxes are sucked from us for the aforementioned. Funny how any person who seems to be concerned about real issues facing the nation.....not the fluff issues......is labeled "radical" or "right wing." If you are placing that label on me, you couldn't be more wrong.
Just because some of us are aware of what's happening in the world and want to make others aware doesn't mean we are crazy. The crazy ones are those who defend these nutjobs that parade around as our leaders.
I ask people to "prove me wrong" when they simply state I am craaazy or do not know what I am talking about. If you believe I am craaazy, how about you actually state something of substance, instead of simply believing you are right and I am wrong. Unlike most, I could care less if I am "right," I'm attempting to make others aware of things that really matter......and as you can see, I am sticking up for others who get belittled for attempting to speak of topics that truly affect us all.
It's quite easy to simply state....."ha! Conspiracy Theorist!" or "you're crazy," but it actually takes one to have some knowledge to show another how they are craazy.
Label me all you want, but you will never see ME simply stating another is wrong, I will attempt to show them the error of their ways. Hmmm, perhaps that is my problem, I actually do care about this world and it's inhabitants. It's quite obvious the majority of you do not....if you did, you would be so tied to the dogma and rhetoric from people who do not care about US.

What do I know? Maybe I am crazy. I CHOOSE to not reside in a world of lies. Jo Ann, I am not sure why you object to lunch being served to school children. Study after study shows hunger has a considerable negative impact on school achievement. In fact many schools offer breakfast and send food home for children over the weekend to improve school achievement. Children who participate in subsidized meals come from families whose wage earners do not make enough to provide food, shelter and clothing, some of them military families. The failure to improve the minimum wage for jobs means that even with two or three jobs, families can go hungry. Food at school is an attempt to level the opportunity field so that not only the wealthy are educated. "We would punish the wealthy for being EDUCATED." ??? Your logic is a bit off. sort of like your economic ideas. Let me help you with some research: The Economist magazine. We could take the high road and try to reason with them but they won't let facts get in the way of their view of the world. So lets just say "Nana nana na-na, we won! You lost. Get over it!"

You did win...Congratulations...I even voted for Obama the first time...there is no such thing as Free lunch....have you seen the waste...have you seen the freebie people...have you really listened to the people...I help package the Backpacks...I even tutored for FREE...they remain ungrateful and want more... I went to a Housing Project every Wednesday for a year to tutor the moms to get their GED...I wanted the children to see education was important to their MOM...not one mother came ...instead they sent their children for ME to do their homework with them..after a year, I surrendered...I see it daily. If you think we are really helping..we are not...what they are really saying you may not be hearing...but its out there an real none the less...one viewing of the Youtube Obama Phone Lady is just a small sample of our self inflicted reality.

It is sad that your efforts were not appreciated in the ways you wanted them to be. Good for you for trying. However, doing "good works" for gratitude or to see people behave the way you think they should, is really very self-centered. I don't mean to be unkind to you, but the gift of service is exactly that, a gift. To expect gratitude for giving help is focusing on your needs and not the needs of those who are being helped. I am no longer surprised by your outlook, but I am very sorry for you. When one tackles difficult problems either as an individual or as a community, success is not always immediate or even defined in ways one would like. The point is to keep trying, to keep planting the seeds and to be delighted by whatever sprouts. I hope you find a way to serve that meets your needs and brightens your outlook.

Thank you Lynda, you are inspiring. Actually, you are most likely a kind person, thinking these people 'just need a hand up.' The gift was a way out of poverty. Every mother was offered a GED and tuition to the local college. That in turn was a gift to her, her family, the community and the economy. They did not need it...all of their needs were met...by a socialistic government. No gratitude was needed, only elbow grease. Have you read the Affordable Health Care Act aka Obamacare.?.massive...it will hurt seniors and businesses the most...more lay offs more cutbacks until everything collapses into government run entities. A Physical Therapist friends husband was an Electrical Engineer for Defense until the day after the election. The signs are out there daily. I don't remember reading about a Welfare office when the Pilgrims landed. Their fortitude and determination created the greatest country known to mankind...not a socialistic welfare state. I've noticed the guys on the blog have been quiet lately. Come back guys..you're invigorating and usually have great insight and information. Have a peaceful Thanksgiving everyone.

Jo Ann, I really enjoy your comments. You are not just pontificating, you live your experiences. I appreciate that and thank you for your kind words. I, like you, have seen well-meaning gestures go afoot. One of the most frustrating things that I see these days is the absolute pervasive, insidious ignorance of the masses who glean their information from sound bites and oft repeated lies that are taken for fact!
The vast majority of the public are simply duped by those entrenched in power to do their bidding. It takes some modicum of effort to stay informed. We have become soft and lazy (evidenced by our ignominious rise to the top of the most obese nation in the Western World!!) How can we then expect people to educate themselves, that would actually take some effort!
The incompetence of this present administration which is so obvious to many of us is totally lost to the rest. The facts and statistics are clear but the "buyers" would rather believe the "salesman". Obama is not the greatest threat to our future, it's ignorance!
When I attended college I was encouraged to explore, expand my horizons and ask questions. It seems now that schools have an agenda of conformity. If you are a "free-thinker" you are ostracized and denigrated.
I read comments by other veterans on this blog that, apparently, never bothered to read the Declaration of Independence, which shows a people not content with the status quo. We are a nation of non-conformist! We don't just take it!

That sound like just another "blamer" and defamer. As to the matter of relative competence, or lack thereof, nothing has ever been worse than the eight years of GWB. Now, Obama is not as good as Clinton, but who is?
However, I do agree with the sentiment that people need to do more original research, rather than parrot-back some crap they heard on talk radio. If we were to ban Fox, and MSNBC, we would all be better for it.

Glad to hear from you guys. Yes, a little sincere research goes a long way. The National Geographic May edition of 2008 or 2009 was entirely about China and stated that "By 2040 China will be the New World Super Power and the United States of America will be as insignificant as Great Britain." So I did some research tonight...ouch...did I find some science fiction sites or are we hiring Chinese Engineers, Contractors and road crews to build US roads and bridges? Have they been purchasing 30,000 acre tracts of U S soil and building small towns? Tell me I googled Mars and there is no truth to this. : } Seriously. What do you know to be factual about this? I never would have known this except for a young professional at dinner tonight that broached the subject.
