Health Tips for Cancer Survivors

Local doctors provide tips and resources for life after cancer.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day.  TheAmerican Institute of Cancer Research estimates that there are approximately 11 million cancer survivors in the United States alone.

The holiday honors those who have bravely battled the disease and provides hope for those who are still fighting cancer all over the world.

“Many hear the word ‘cancer’ and think it is a death sentence,” said Randy Kahn, M.D., FACRO, of Tampa Bay Radiation Oncology.

“But, with advancements being made daily related to treatment, detection and prevention, this is certainly not always the case. National Cancer Survivors Day serves as a great opportunity to celebrate the strength of cancer survivors and highlight the need for continued support for these survivors after cancer,” Kahn said.

Here are five tips for survivors to stay healthy (and happy):

1. Keep up with physicals. Many consider a “survivor” to be someone who has been cancer-free for at least five years, and (understandably) after five years of consistent check-ups, some might drag their feet when the time comes to plan their next trip to the doctor. Despite the clean bill of health, it is important to stay up to date on screening recommendations for all cancers and keep up with regular check-ups.

2. Interact with other survivors. Cancer survivors have experienced things that others cannot thoroughly understand. While friends and family can provide lots of support, it can also help to join a group or attend events where you can meet other survivors and share stories, feelings and encouragement.

3. Celebrate! You beat cancer, and that is no easy feat. Be sure to celebrate all important anniversaries and milestones. You deserve it!

4. Join the cause. Survivors understand all too well the need for continued support of cancer research. Research and participate in local fundraisers and events aimed at spreading the word and raising funds to find a cure.

5. Volunteer to help. Many cancer patients can use advice and support from someone who was victorious in their battle. Volunteer at local cancer hospital or become a mentor.
