Pilots Rescue Dogs in Georgia

A couple of pet-loving pilots flew to Georgia to rescue a mother dog who had been living with her puppies in a small crawlspace underneath a shed. The dog and her pups are now at the Suncoast Animal League.

A dog nicknamed "Punkin" has a new name and a new start at life, thanks to the and two pilots, who donated their time and a plane to fly to Georgia to rescue "Punkin" and her puppies.

Earlier this month, we told you about , a mother dog who had spent the last few weeks living with her puppies in a crawlspace underneath a shed in rural Georgia. "Punkin" had a serious facial injury that may have been from trying to protect her puppies. A Georgia rescue group tried to remove her from underneath the shed, but she refused to leave her puppies.

The Suncoast Animal League wanted to help "Punkin", so they put out the word asking if anyone could donate time and transportation to go to Georgia to rescue "Punkin and her puppies.

The league's request was answered and a private plane and two pilots made the trip to Georgia and rescued the dogs.

Suncoast Animal League Executive Director Rick Chaboudy kept in contact with the pilots via text messages. One text described the results of a doggie "accident" on the plane.

The pilot's text read: "Bring Febreeze."

"You can't open the windows at 3,000 feet! The pilot's text was short and to the point," said Chaboudy.

The plane landed safely and "Punkin" -who has been renamed "Chessie"- and her puppies got a lot of much-needed attention. They were bathed and cuddled by Suncoast Animal League staff, and examined by Animal Hospital of Northwood Veterinarian, Dr. John Woodman.

"Chessie and her remaining puppies are safe now and they will be provided the medical care they need, thanks to a group of caring people who had never met the dogs before.

From Angel Dog Rescue in Georgia who coaxed her out from under the shed, to Pilot's Mike and Vitaly who made a round trip to get her, to our supporters and volunteers who helped with the financial burden and to Dr. Woodman and Animal Hospital of Northwood who will provide the medical care, it was a great team effort. And we couldn't be prouder of our team," said Chaboudy.

The puppies are now available for adoption at the Suncoast Animal League.
