Service Honors Fallen Soldiers
Oldsmar remembers those who gave their lives with a special service at Veteran's Memorial Park.
Oldsmar's new Veteran's Memorial Park served as the backdrop for a Memorial Day Service honoring fallen soldiers Saturday morning.
“I feel it’s to honor those who made the final sacrifice,” said George Dukes.
Dukes, who served in both the occupation army of World War II on the Rhine River, and the Vietnam War, hoped that Memorial day would continue to be a day to honor those who did not make it home, or died in combat.

“The way we honor this day is by taking care of wounded warriors," said Congressman Gus Bilirakis.
Bilirakis spoke at the service, echoing the words of Dukes, reminding attendees that the service and the three day weekend be remembered as a time to reflect and remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty, so that we can continue to pursue the things we love, freely.

“Don’t forget them,” said Lt. Col. Norma J Vargas, after the ceremony. “It would be a disservice.”
Vargas had the honor of giving the ceremony’s keynote speech. Vargas is Chief of Analysis Branch, Joint Security Office and Operations Directorate at United States Central Command, which is located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
Vargas’s speech touched on the importance of the army, including selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.
“These values are what made our military strong, and will keep our nation strong,” said Vargas.
Members of Oldsmar’s city council, including Mayor Jim Ronecker also spoke at the occasion, who took the time to thank Bilirakis for speaking.
“Thank you for being a friend of the city of Oldsmar,” said Ronecker.
Not only is Bilirakis a member of congress, he’s also the vice chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
The service also kicked off Oldsmar's weekend-long Freedom Fest, starting today and ending Sunday.
