Should the Day After Super Bowl Be a National Holiday?

A petition posted Jan. 24 asking for the day off has more than 12,000 signatures so far.

Bragging rights. Chicken wings. Plenty of beer. The Super Bowl is more than just the ultimate football game. It's a holiday in itself, no matter which team (or commercials) you're rooting for.

Rivaled only by Thanksgiving, Super Bowl Sunday is the second largest food fest in the nation with Americans gobbling up more than 30 million pounds of snacks. And more people are likely to waste time or call in sick the next day than any other day, according to AOL Jobs.

Now, an online petition aims to make the day after a national holiday so the nation can unite—and recuperate.

4for4.com Fantasy Football created a petition Jan. 24 that has garnered more than 12,000 signatures as of Feb. 1. It needs 100,000 to get an official response from the White House.

By declaring the day a holiday, "the Obama Administration can promote camaraderie among the American people, keep the streets safer for our children on Sunday night and Monday morning, promote a productive workplace when work resumes on Tuesday, and honor the most popular event in modern American culture," according to the petition.

The petition isn't likely to get enough traction for a response in time for Super Bowl XLVII's battle between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens, set to kick off at the Superdome in New Orleans Feb. 3. But 4for4.com owner Josh Moore hopes it will make an impact for future games.

"I think we have a chance," Moore recently told Yahoo Sports.

That is about as ridiculous as it gets. What's next? The day after Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick's Day? Any occasion where people booze it up in excess so that over-indulgers can have the day after to recuperate? It's about time people grow up, and recognize only significant events as holidays. Let's see, on the one hand we have Martin Luther King and President's Day, and on the other, the day after Superbowl Sunday. What an insult to significance.
