Boy, 9, Raised Money in Honor of Grandma He Never Knew

A few weeks ago, we told you about Kamryn Finchum, a Palm Harbor 9-year-old who pulled a wagon around his neighborhood to gather stuff to sell at a garage sale in honor of his grandmother, who died from breast cancer before he was born.

"I've never really met my grandma, so I wanna help raise money so no other kids will have to live without their grandma," the Highland Lakes Elementary fourth-grader told Palm Harbor Patch in November. 

Kamryn's mom, Allie, now tells us he raised $1,071 at the garage sale. 

"The turn out was absolutely amazing we had people bringing items to sell up till 3 p.m.," she said.

Some people went to the garage sale and found out it was being held in honor of Kamryn's grandmother and the proceeds were going to charity. They were so touched by Kamryn's effort, they went home, gathered items and brought them back to donate for the sale.

"We even had a few people drive by and roll down their window, ask for Kamryn and hand him some money, truly showing how our communities can pull together for a good cause," said his mom.

The story gets even better. Kamryn's uncle, Willy Bates, lives in California and owns a company called Rugged Ranch, which makes products for farms. He promised to match whatever Kamryn made at the garage sale. So, the total donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be $2,142.

Allie says many people asked if there will be another garage sale next year. She says they're planning on having another one in October.
