Earth Medicine: Cupcakes, Boyfriends, and a Perfect pH

Heard the scuttlebutt about the importance of pH? Hint: we're not talking about the swimming pool. Julie puts pH into perspective and explains why the proper pH is vital to your good health.

   You can't judge a book by its cover. Take my cupcakes for example. Many moons ago I thought I'd impress a potential boyfriend with my baking skills so I whipped up a batch of chocolate cupcakes.  These cupcakes didn't come from a box, no sir. I made them from scratch, and I was convinced these unbelievably scrumptious and decadent looking cupcakes would completely bowl him over (okay, he was really cute) and possibly even earn me some kind of Betty Crocker award. 

     I was on tenterhooks when he bit into my prize-winning cupcake. But the look on his face, combined with the sound he made while spitting my hard work halfway across the room, quickly told the story.  Yeah they looked tasty, but apparently something really unpleasant happens to the flavor of baked goods when you use salt instead of sugar.  Well, the would-be-boyfriend ditched me --right after he accused me of trying to poison him-- and I in turn ditched my decorative countertop canisters. To this day I keep sugar in the bag and salt in the shaker where I can keep an eye on 'em.

     Like I said, you can't judge a book by its cover. Our health is that way too. If you're among my family of clients at Bailey's Naturals, then you know I'm a big advocate of Nutritional Cell Analysis, also known as Live Blood Analysis.  Not too long ago I had the technician --Brandi Stewart-- analyze my blood.  Now keep in mind that I consider myself the poster child of living right.  Fresh, whole foods diet, small amounts of meat, lots of greens, mild intake of caffeine and alcohol.... TONS of water.  I grow my own veggies for Pete's sake.  I'm proud to say that I look younger then I am, and I energetically pack a lot into each and every day.  Can you imagine my shock when Brandi told me my blood pH was too acidic?  What? Wait a minute. How? She asked if I'd been under any stress. Mmmm, let's see.  Small business owner who works 6 days a week, single mom.... well, yeah there might be some stress there.  

     Turns out that despite all the things I was doing right, the stress --which I wasn't paying much attention to-- was taking a toll on my health... and I was clueless.  It all ends well though, because armed with this new information I upped my exercise, spent more time in meditation and prayer, focused on how much I loved my teenage daughter (instead of how badly I wanted to chain her to a tree until she was no longer a teenager), started using trace mineral drops in my beverages, and what do you know? My pH came back to where it should be. The pH balance of the body is very, very important. Why? Let's take a look.  

     The measure of acidity or alkalinity of any substance --including the blood-- is called pH. The pH scale says neutral is 7; acids have a low pH number and alkaline substances have a high pH.  Healthy, oxygen-rich arterial blood is slightly alkaline, between 7.34 and 7.45 on the pH scale. (Other body fluids like saliva, urine, and gastric juices have their own healthy pH ranges that fluctuate throughout the day; their pH doesn't have as dramatic an effect on the body.) I can already sense your eyes glazing over, so I'll spare you the rest of the med-techno-babble.

     Still, you need to understand that your body is unceasingly involved in a balancing act to keep your blood pH tightly regulated. This is critical because blood has access to every living tissue.  If you're running chronically acidic, the body will do what it needs to do, such as robbing minerals from your bone to increase alkalinity. Yep, a low pH can cause osteoporosis, along with kidney disease, heart disease, muscle weakness, coma, and death. It's disturbingly easy for blood pH to become acidic, causing your body to rob Peter to pay Paul, and --like me-- you can be completely unaware it's happening.  Acidosis is dangerous... and dangerously common in this day and age.

     Stress, refined sugar in any form, caffeine, alcohol, meat, baked goods, and even some foods that we might consider healthy can skew our pH acidic.  So will dehydration.  You can safely assume your pH is acidic if you fail to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of pure filtered water --every day. (I'm tempted to go on a rant about water drinking here, but I'll exercise restraint and save it for another time. Just drink your water, okay?)  I should also point out that bottled fruit juices --even the organic variety-- are acidic. That's because they're pasteurized, meaning they're... cooked. The only alkaline fruit juices are those you make yourself from fresh fruit. 

     Your diet plays a huge role in whether or not you're acidic, so do yourself and your family a favor by Googling "acid / alkaline food chart", printing it and taping it to a cupboard. Leave it there until you get the hang of it.  Additionally, find whatever stress-relieving method works for you, and don't forget half your body weight in ounces of pure water every day. I mean it. Don't make me stop the car.

     Still not sure if this whole pH thing should be important to you?  Try this on for size: scientific research shows that viruses, bacteria, fungus, and even cancer cells cannot grow and proliferate in an alkaline environment. I'll say it another way:  if you keep your blood pH slightly alkaline, you simply can't get sick.  Look it up. And while you're at it, research Dr. Tullio Simoncini, an Italian physician who has gained notoriety for injecting high solution baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) directly into tumors, which causes instant death of cancerous cells. Seriously.

     Nutritional Cell Analysis, which I mentioned earlier, is an excellent way to find out if you're on the right alkaline track.  I host this low-cost health analysis once a month at my shop (that's how important I think it is) and if you'd like to learn more about it just get in touch. I also suggest that you invest in some pH Protection Drops, which are highly alkalizing liquid trace minerals used to neutralize acidic beverages or give your water an alkaline boost. I keep a bottle in my home, car, and place of work.  It doesn't change the taste, and it allows me to have my wine.... and drink it too.  Okay. Let's just keep that between you and me, okay?

Great information to know! I drink my purified water with fresh squeezed lemon juice in every glass I drink throught the day and in my White organic tea!

Great article Julie! I too am a lemon water fanatic after finding out that I was acidic and prone to gout. I always thought the pain in my feet and hands were arthritis, but after seeing a hand and foot specialist was sent down the right path. I am bad, bad, bad about avoiding sugar, caffeine and other culprits but try to eat as many alkaline foods as possible. I love your pH Protection Drops too! When I stick to a better alkaline diet, lemon water and the pH drops, I am pain free... Thank you for your vast knowledge and willingness to share and help others!
