Palm Harbor Man Who Reported Missing Swimmer Accused of Burglarizing Boat

This post was reported and written by Patch Local Editor Katie Dolac.

A Palm Harbor man who reported a swimmer missing off the Dunedin Causeway is now facing a burglary charge, with more possible charges to come, pending lab results.

Rescuers launched a search for swimmer Jessica Frehe, 36, of Dunedin, after her boyfriend Daren Nailos, 36, of Palm Harbor, reported her missing around 4:45 a.m. Friday.

Nalios reported that he lost sight of his girlfriend while swimming somewhere in the water just off the Dunedin Causeway. He was worried that she might be in distress in the area of 444 North Paula Dr., a Pinellas County Sheriff's spokesperson reports.

As rescuers launched a search for Frehe, deputies discovered a string of burglaries in the area.

During the search for Frehe, a deputy discovered her fleeing the scene in her vehicle.

Interviews with Frehe and Nalios confirmed that the couple broke into a boat at 2671 St. Joseph's Dr. East and stole various items to include food and alcohol, deputies report. After breaking into the vessel, the pair swam back to shore, which is when Nalios lost sight of Frehe.

Frehe is charged with one count of burglary.

Deputies suspect the couple is also connected to the string of reported car break-ins in the area, but are awaiting forensic results before filing any additional charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
