East Lake Engineering Program Wins Prestigious Honor

The school's Academy of Engineering has been designated as one of the best in the country.

The engineering program at East Lake High School has received a prestigious designation by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation.

The school’s Academy of Engineering has been named a PRIME site by the society, signifying it as one of the top engineering programs in the country. There are only 15 PRIME sites currently, according to a media release issued by the Pinellas County school district. East Lake High School’s would be the first in Florida.

East Lake's four year engineering program focuses on science, technology, engineering and math, according to the school's website. The program format is provided by Project Lead the Way through Rochester Institute of Technology.

As a PRIME site, the academy will receive a total of $35,000 in funding over a three-year period from the society. 

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation’s goal is to encourage students to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM.)
