Palm Harbor Cancer Survivor Wins State Scholarship

It was Chelsea Morgan's leadership, positive attitude and volunteer work for pediatric cancer patients that really made her stand apart across Florida's 67 counties.

Morgan, a Palm Harbor resident and senior at the University of Florida, was recently bestowed the $1,200 2013 Jimmy Whitehouse Scholarship Award from the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections, according to a recent news release.

"Chelsea’s strong motivation for volunteering at Shands Hospital and working with pediatric cancer patients springs from her experience as a cancer survivor herself," a Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections news release says. "These children have a special place in her heart."

“To register more than 1,800 people in the bone marrow database and to see the results of 10 life-saving matches is phenomenal,” said Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark, who nominated Morgan for the award.

Morgan is the only recipient in the state chosen for the annual award.

According to the news release, scholarship applicants are required to be junior or senior students in a Florida college, registered to vote, and majoring in political science, public administration, business administration, journalism or mass communications.

Morgan is a political science major.
