Two Palm Harbor Teens to Perform in Prestigious Scholarship Competition

Two talented Palm Harbor University High students will be on center stage Monday night when they compete in the prestigious Walker's Rising Stars Scholarship Competition. 

Amanda Springer and Justin Ma are two of 25 Pinellas County high school students who will compete in the competition, which is in its tenth year. Walker's Rising Stars provides college scholarships to juniors and seniors in Pinellas County public high schools. Solo performers compete in dance, drama, vocal music, instrumental music and visual arts categories. Groups of up to three students can also compete in the visual arts category.

Students entered the scholarship contest by submitting an application and essay. Finalists were then selected and invited to perform and display their works at the final competition, which will be held Monday, May 20 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

Justin Ma

Justin Ma is competing in the Instrumental Music category. He plays the piano which he says is an incredibly versatile instrument.

"Over the years, despite my time playing other instruments or periods listening to other instruments, I have found the allure of piano music to be infinite," said Ma in his contestant profile.

"With this opportunity I also look to my future, one filled with music for many years to come."

Amanda Springer is competing in the Vocal Music Category. Springer says she hopes to spend the rest of her life dedicated to the arts.

" Music plays such an important role in my life. Nothing brings me more joy than performing and sharing my voice with others. I can only hope that I can utilize my talent to positively impact others," said Springer in her contestant profile .
