The grants are distributed by Splash!, which is a school grant program funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
Carla March, a teacher at Ozona Elementary was one of 12 Pinellas County teachers who were awarded grants to teach students about issues surrounding freshwater resources. The grants are distributed by Splash!, which is a school grant program funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. March was awarded $1,800. One of the projects that the money will be used for is a field trip to Fort De Soto Park. Students will learn about water quality while discovering how water drains across a watershed and picks up pollutants before draining into a larger water body such as Tampa Bay. Splash! school grants provide up to $3,000 per school on a reimbursement basis and are available to public school teachers. In addition to Splash! grant…

Palm Harbor mom Jenn Stryczny shared a letter she wrote to Pinellas County officials about the intersection of Alternate 19 and Florida Avenue near her kids' school, Ozona Elementary. She calls it "the scariest intersection we have around here."
Below is a letter that Palm Harbor mother Jenn Stryczny wrote to Pinellas County Transportation Department officials about an intersection that she thinks is dangerous. Do you agree or disagree with her? Let us know in the comments section below. Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to express my concern for the intersection of Florida Ave and Alt U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor. I travel through this intersection at least two times a day taking my children to Ozona Elementary. To put it simply, this is the scariest intersection we have around here. I am attaching a picture of my view of the southbound lanes as I was waiting to turn onto Alt. U.S. 19 from Florida Ave east-bound. Can you see all of the cars heading south? Neither can I. Numerous …

An estimated 1,000 to 1,500 people attended the unveiling of Palm Harbor's 9/11 memorial Tuesday morning at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.
Residents of North Pinellas County now have a permanent memorial honoring the victims of the September 11 attacks. The large crowd that turned out at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor for Tuesday's unveiling of the memorial was proof of the community's strong desire to remember those killed in the attacks. A thousand programs were printed for the memorial, and all were distributed to guests shortly after 9 a.m. When the ceremony started at 10:02 a.m., cars were still backed up on Curlew Road almost all the way to U.S. 19 waiting to get in. "There were easily 1,000 to 1,500 people at the memorial," said Keenan Knopke, President of Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. The 9/11 memorial was more than a year in the making. It features a …

Frederick King, who takes time to get to know the Palm Harbor Middle and Ozona Elementary students he protects, was honored this month with the 2012 Maybelle Rollins Bradford Award.
Frederick King shows up at Tampa Road and Alternate U.S. 19 every day. Rain, cold, heat, it doesn't matter. King is at the intersection every school day, helping safely shepherd students to and from Ozona Elementary school. "Sometimes, it rains so hard that my shoes are full of water before my shift even starts," King joked. King has been working as a crossing guard in Pinellas County since 2002. He also serves as a crossing guard at Palm Harbor Middle School. King is such a fixture at the intersection of Alt. 19 and Tampa Road, he "knows all his students and parents by name and can even remember the sports the students participate in," according to a media release from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. For his dedication, the …

All Palm Harbor schools scored an "A" or "B" in rankings released this week by the Florida Department of Education.
Palm Harbor University High (PHUH) is one of the top 20 high schools in the state, according to newly-released rankings from the Florida Dept. of Education. The state ranked PHUH 17 out of more than 400 Florida high schools. Palm Harbor University High Principal Christen Tonry is proud of the accomplishment, "We're very proud of the students, it also takes a strong faculty and staff to make it possible," she said. Tonry says the rankings consisted of a lot more than just FCAT scores, "A multitude of things came together," she said. The state ranked Joseph L. Carwise Middle School 90 out of 583 middle schools in the state putting it in the top 20% of middle schools. The rankings are based on points derived from FCAT scores and other …

Boundary changes for Ozona Elementary and 26 other schools will take effect in the 2012-13 school year.
An elementary school rezoning plan designed to stabilize school populations across the county was unanimously approved Tuesday evening. School leaders say the changes are intended to relieve crowding at some schools while taking advantage of room at others. The rezoning plan will affect more than 2,100 students at 27 elementary schools. The 6-0 vote came after Pinellas County School Board heard from a dozen parents who voiced a variety of concerns. The public discussion was set for 7 p.m. to allow parents who work during the day to participate. Some of the parents who spoke against the changes live north of Curlew Road in Palm Harbor, an area that has seen multiple zoning changes in the past few years. "We feel like there is a target on…

Students at two local elementary schools would be affected if the school board approves boundary changes for 2012-13.
Boundaries for 27 elementary school districts in Pinellas County are poised to be redrawn if the school board gives final approval to a 2012-13 rezoning plan at today's meeting. Palm Harbor students at Ozona and San Jose elementary schools would be affected if the rezoning proposal is approved. At a preliminary hearing Nov. 8, Eric Keaton was among Ozona Elementary parents who spoke out against the plan. "Ozona Elementary is an A school. I have high expectations for my kids that they're going to earn A's. Why would I want to take them out of an A school?" Keaton asked the board. "It should be my choice where they go to school. We pay the property taxes; we direct you to make the right decision." District officials say the changes are …

The Pinellas County School Board will vote for the first time on a controversial proposal to send more than 3,000 kids back to their zoned schools next year.
Pinellas County School Board members will tackle the controversial issue of school rezoning during Tuesday's regular meeting. The board is scheduled to vote for the first time about a proposal that would go into effect next school year and would send more than 3,000 kids back to schools that they're zoned for, as opposed to allowing them to attend schools outside the boundaries in which they live. When school choice program ended in 2008, many students and their brothers and sisters were allowed to continue to attend schools that their parents had picked when the school choice policy was in effect. Because of this, some kids can't attend schools in their own zone due to overcrowding . The school board has also proposed new school zoning …

I lived on 8th St and thus I too have experienced the same issue. In fact, I have almost had two wrecks at that intersection, during only the two years I've been living on 8th St. Since time will only tell whether our leaders will look into this subject matter...there is a simple solution for the writer's particular situation. Simply take another route. She can take multiple different routes to …   more ›
